The State Peace and Development Council, a secretive military junta, has used its position to imprison opponents, implement forced labour, commit genocide against restive minorities and generally repress all expressions of dissent. Because the military junta has both pillaged and stunted the economy, the former “rice bowl of Asia” sees two-thirds of its children malnourished and the majority survive on less than $1/day.
The regime recognizes the special status of Buddhism. Freedom of religion exists, at least according to the constitution, and Christianity and Islam are strong among several minority groups. The combination of ethnic, political and religious differences along with violent opposition means that some Christian minorities, in particular the Karen and Chin, suffer greatly at the hands of the military.
Today, Christians are generally kept out of positions of power and influence. Military campaigns against Christian minorities are well publicized, and more than 3,000 Christian villages have been burned in the last 10 years. Churches are not given permission to register and are thereby considered illegal and subject to harassment.
While the military regime seeks to destroy Christianity (which it calls “the C-virus”), faith keeps spreading. Adversity, persecution, and isolation continue to shape a resilient, enduring faith.
- Pray Christians who have been harassed and attacked by the military will follow the words of Christ in loving their enemies (Matthew 5:44-45). Ask God to use their sufferings as opportunities to spread the gospel of the kingdom.
- Pray for divine intervention in the junta’s actions. Pray for repentance of those who use their power in wicked ways.
