Ethiopia annexed Eritrea as a province 10 years later,

Kidane: “In this hard time, God protected and provided for us”  07/06/2012

“I’d only been a Christian for two days when I was arrested”

Kidane had only been a Christian for two days, when he was arrested at a church service in Eritrea.  Along with the rest of the congregation he was taken to prison, where he lived in a tiny cell with one other person for six months. The cell was just seven by five feet, and was very dirty and hot.  He could only sleep from 4am-10am – when prison walls got a little colder. He couldn’t go outside, and was only given bread and soup to eat.

But after that things got much worse.

He was imprisoned in a metal shipping container with 22-25 other people.  In the daytime the container was boiling hot – the windows were only small.  At night, once the door was shut there was no oxygen.  Kidane lived like this for eight months.

“Do you prefer your container to signing this document?”

In May 2010, Kidane was asked to sign a letter by the government to renounce his faith.  Kidane has several brothers and sisters, but they are not Christians, so the government was using them to plead with him to renounce his faith. When in prison, his mother came to prison to plead with him to sign the government document. When he agreed, it was the hardest moment of his life, because he knew he was rejecting Jesus Christ. After two days, he changed his mind and peace returned to him. Kidane was asked, “Do you prefer your container to signing this document?” He replied, “I want to stay here with the peace of the Lord rather than go out without His peace”.

A harrowing escape to freedom

After enduring years of hard labour, Kidane tried to escape with four others. They went into hiding in the bush. Moving only in the dark, the group could hardly see the top of the nearby mountains by moonlight.
When the group was approaching the border area with another country, dogs began to chase them and an Eritrean soldier appeared. Everyone panicked and ran in different directions. Suddenly Kidane was on his own.
Eventually, he climbed the mountain and stayed there until about 7am. When he tried to descend, he could not find a way down, and his path crossed with that of a leopard. Fearing for his life, Kidane sat completely still for five minutes. At that point a scripture verse came to him – Psalm 104: 20-23. He informed the leopard that day time was time for human beings – “this is not the predators time, it is mine”, then walked away happily, following a river.
After much walking, he attempted to cross the border and was stopped by an Eritrean soldier.  He asked the soldier to help him and the man showed compassion.
Kidane is now a refugee, but he is still in a vulnerable situation.

The North Korea of Africa

Today there are 20,000 people imprisoned in Eritrea – often referred to as the North Korea of Africa.
Between 2,000 and 3,000 of them are Christians, imprisoned in inhumane conditions – without trial or charge - in detention centres where torture is rife.
Thousands of Eritreans flee every year, risking the government’s shoot-to-kill border policy in appalling bids for freedom. Even if they manage to escape, as refugees they often face desperate and dangerous conditions, as well as the threat of kidnap, torture and forcible organ harvesting by Bedouin people traffickers in the Sinai.
The lives of Kidane and many others have been devastated by the brutal actions of the Eritrean Government.

[Eritrea: Christians imprisoned in containers: for do saudi imperialism] In 1952, Eritrea joined Ethiopia as part of a federation. When Ethiopia annexed Eritrea as a province 10 years later, a struggle for independence began that ended with victory by the Eritrean rebels in 1991. In 1998, a border war with Ethiopia began, ending with intervention from the U.N. in December 2000 and a peace agreement. There was a general freedom to practice religion in Eritrea until 2002, when the government announced it would recognize only four religious communities: the Orthodox Church of Eritrea, Sunni Islam, the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran-affiliated Evangelical Church of Eritrea. From 2002 to 2010, the government has jailed, tortured and killed numerous Eritreans for political and religious reasons, and tortured and killed many of them extra-judicially.

[Eritrea: Christians imprisoned in containers: for do saudi imperialism] Today, it is estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 Christians are in Eritrean prisons. Believers face deplorable conditions, including torture. Many are held in metal shipping containers with no ventilation or toilet facilities. A November 2010 religious liberty report says that Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki wants to restrict and pre-empt any formation of people's association. He fears that religious freedom will lead to evangelism by Christian groups and thereby cause social tensions that can be exploited by "outside forces" to destabilize the nation. Additionally, he views democracy as a threat to the nation's unity and stability. Despite open persecution, the government continues to support its statement issued in May 2003 that "no groups or persons are persecuted in Eritrea for their beliefs or religion."

[Eritrea: Christians imprisoned in containers: for do saudi imperialism] Of thousands of Christians in detention, not one has been charged with a crime or faced trial. While concerns over Christian persecution have been raised at various international forums, there has been little change in the attitude and policy of the one-party government. Prayer Requests Pray for Christians in prison, especially those being held in metal shipping containers. Ask God to encourage and strengthen them as they endure horrendous conditions. Praise God for those Eritrean Christians who have managed to escape and share their stories with the West! Pray their stories will inspire Christians to pray for Eritrea. Ask God to further the gospel in this very young African nation that many have not heard of. Pray for humility on the parts of the government leaders.
