TIBET – CINA

TIBET - CHINA. He had fought for the independence of Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama and was imprisoned for "counterrevolutionary activities "and" threats to the socialist state. " His release was confirmed by several Tibetan sources and reported by Radio Free Asia: Jigme Gyatso, 52, is back at his home in Sangchu (Gansu Province) after being released from the notorious Chushul prison, near Lhasa. He had been sentenced in 1996 to 15 years in prison. His main fault was having founded the Association for Tibetan free movement (or Group for Tibetan independence and truth),a para-legal organization calling for cultural and religious autonomy for the region. In 2004, after eight years in prison, he was sentenced to a further 3 years in prison for having shouted in prison "Long live the Dalai Lama". The release of Jigme was scheduled for March 2014, but his health has worsened demanding a quicker release.

Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah went after Bassem Youssef, Egypt's best-known satirist, for insulting the president on his TV show el Bernameg. EGYPT [Arab League said: "no mercy, the Caliphate worldWide, must be done! Opposition activists and party leaders are concerned about President Morsi's government authoritarianism. In recent months, the president has appointed cronies to national and local courts. After the Muslim Brotherhood came to power, the satirist has repeatedly criticised in his show the president and the country's slide towards Islamism, which attracts more than 30 million viewers. His humour and the support it has generated have not gone unnoticed. TV channels operated by Salafists have started a vitriolic campaign against the satirist, who is Christian by origin. His satire has led to charges of blasphemy, denigrating Islam, and insulting President Mohamed Morsi, accusations that he has always rejected as specious and false. (S.C.)

"I'm happy to see faith grow among the newly baptised," said Bhim Rai, head of the catechists in the diocese of Kathmandu. "For two years, we have educated them and followed them step by step in their journey toward baptism." However, Rai points out that once baptised, many catechumens often return to their original religion for a variety of reasons: family pressures, poor understanding of Christian culture, or fear.

[respect, wisdom, moderation, free will in NEPAL, now] "For us," he said, "numbers do not count, the quality of conversions does, which must be genuine and start from a real change in the person.". According to the catechist, about 30 to 40 conversions take place each year. "The new generation," he explains, "shows a maturity of faith that is even greater than many people born into Christian families." This is mainly due to a favourable situation that has in recent years allowed Christians to worship freely, but also to the decline of Hindu religious values and Maoist and Communist ideology. For decades, the latter has been for many young Nepalis a model of freedom. Christians began enjoying greater religious freedom when Nepal's Hindu monarchy was abolished in 2006, allowing many Catholics to come out of hiding and show their faith in public.

Monk who cried freedom for Tibet released after 17 years
Communist authorities released Jigme Gyatso, 52, a year early. He was arrested in 1996 for "counterrevolutionary activities." His health worsened after the recent and brutal beatings suffered in prison at the hands of security agents.

Lhasa (AsiaNews) - In a rare gesture, the Chinese authorities have freed and a monaco Tibetan activist after 17 years in prison.

Immediately after his arrest, he was beaten so severely that he can no longer walk properly and was repeatedly hospitalized.

In May 1998, Jigme Gyatso was part of the group of prisoners who had shouted slogans for the freedom of Tibet during the visit of a delegation from the European Union in Drapchi prison, where he was confined. Immediately after the end of the official visit, the public security officials rushed into the group to punish them: nine of them died as a result of beatings.

Pro-independence symbolism in Aceh's new flag scares Jakarta
by Mathias Hariyadi
Tensions between central and provincial governments reach high mark after the province proposes a flag that includes elements from the flag of the separatist Free Aceh Movement. Jakarta gives the province two weeks to change it, hints it might suspend the implementation of Sharia. Its behaviour suggests it is afraid that Aceh's pro-independence sentiments might spread to other parts of the archipelago.04/03/2013 BANGLADESH
